Romantic Explorations

The conference focuses on the various ways in which the Romantics exploded traditional notions of the arts, of the humanities and science, exploring new ground in a literal and a metaphorical sense. Papers may deal with individual disciplines or interdisciplinary connections between the arts and other discourses, addressing

  • Philosophy: rational and intuitive knowledge, visual hermeneutics, and the visionary
  • Science: experimental knowledge and aesthetic experience
  • Geography, ethnography, and history: self and other in domestic and foreign (factual or fictional) travelogues, and in historical writing
  • The arts, media, and aesthetics.

It is of great interest to see whether, how, and why (1) changing epistemological paradigms of perception and knowledge in philosophy, science and the arts mutually influence each other, (2) the experience of new spaces and cultures is shaped by or in turn shapes notions of knowledge, history, and identity, and (3) innovative uses of (inter-)medial forms of representation are interrelated with new ideas and values in the arts, the humanities, and science. Modernization has largely been associated with differentiation within and between the arts, the humanities, and science. It is the question to which extent a movement towards integration counterbalances the specialization of discourses and its detrimental effects.

Papers should not exceed 25 minutes, to allow for ample discussion time.

Note: By special agreement, members of BARS and NASSR do not have to become members of the German Society for English Romanticism to take part in this conference!
